Stanton is located 10 miles southeast of Norfolk on U.S. Highway 24. Stanton is a rural community with a population of one thousand six hundred thirty-two according to the latest census in 2019. Stanton is a bedroom community. Most employment for our patrons is in Norfolk. The school district boundaries fall entirely within Stanton County. The population of both the community and school has been very consistent over the past 10 years.
Crop farming and livestock production are the major facets of the agricultural economy. Over the past five years, agriculture land valuation has seen increases annually. This increase has caused the district's state aid to be reduced over a five-year period.
The Stanton Community Schools’ facilities are state of the art. Students in Pre-School attend their own building two blocks from the K-4 building. Students in kindergarten through fourth grades attend school in their own separate building while the fifth through twelfth students attend another facility. The community offers support to both the students and faculty.
The elementary building was built in 1969. It currently serves as the attendance site for kindergarten through fourth grade. Stanton has two teachers per grade level up through the sixth grade except in sixth and third grade which changes grade levels each year due to enrollment numbers. Stanton offers full day, every day kindergarten and full day, four days a week Pre-School.
The middle school building was constructed in 1953. An addition of a library, band/music room, art room, and superintendent’s office was completed in 1975. The new addition in 1996 separated the high school and middle school. The new construction added a gym, locker rooms, multi-purpose room, and two stories of classrooms. The heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system was updated in the 1953 and 1975 additions in 2014.
The Stanton Community Schools has 400 students. Of the 400 students, 20 are pre-school students, 209 students are in grades K-6, and 191 are students are in grades 7-12. The district has a low student diversity rate for 91.21% of the students have an ethnic code of white. Stanton's student poverty rate (32.0%) is lower than the state's poverty (46.33%). It must be noted that school meals were provided for free to all students in 2020-2021 and 2021-2022, which resulted in fewer applications.
The Stanton Community School system is a Class III, Nebraska and North Central Accredited school staffed by a superintendent, two principals, thirty-seven teachers, 1.5 FTE guidance counselors, and twenty-eight non-certified staff. The student/teacher ratio is 12/1. 91.39% of the teachers teach in their endorsed area which is slightly higher than the state average of 6.80%.
